About Us

The Iowa Association of Black Journalists was founded in 2021 and officially became the first Iowa-based chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists in October of that year. As an organization, IABJ works to implement the following goals:

● Strengthen ties among Black journalists

● Become an exemplary group of professionals that honors excellence and outstanding achievements from Black journalists

● Expand job opportunities for Black journalists and identify potential Black journalists in high schools and colleges across Iowa

● Help educate the Black community on the media’s role in the community

● Promote understanding among local media management of issues sensitive to the Black community

● Promote professional development through events and educational events throughout the state

Our History

The Iowa Association of Black Journalists (IABJ) was founded in 2021 and is the first Iowa-based chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists.

IABJ Founding Board Members: President Tisia Muzinga, Vice President Ty Rushing, Secretary Nixson Benitez, Treasurer Khalil Maycock, and Parliamentarian Dwana Bradley.

The National Association of Black Journalists was founded in 1975.

NABJ was created to provide quality programs and services for Black journalists worldwide, and the Iowa chapter strives for a similar mission in a local capacity.
